Sequential Figure & Ground
The Sequential Figure & Ground assignment was designed to help further the understanding of the importance of figure and ground while creating a comprehensive composition. Typography was spelt one direction in white and then backward in black. First, the goal was to separate the pairs of letters and create a composition that worked well together. After that was accomplished, the next goal was to put all the letters together and work on their relationship with one another. Feedback received for this project stated that there seemed to be three distinct sections to the composition rather than a sequential composition. During revisions, the goal was to focus on the flow and make it as cohesive as possible. A focal point was created in the center of the design with attention to the tone displayed by each end. Both ends of the design exhibit a similar message while making the entire composition feel connected.

Figure Ground Tests
The critique received on these figure and ground practice compositions were that the overall relationship between the letters is lacking. The understanding of how each letter relates to one another is not very strong in many of the compositions. They are also very messy due to the random shapes the letters leave behind that make the composition feel unintentional.
Structural Sketches
The structural sketches were completed in order to help develop the understanding of flow within the composition. The way the letters flowed between each other and how they drew the eye through the piece was one of the main focuses of the assignment.
